God.
The concept that has deluded man, for times that have passed and ages that will come. The concept around which innumerable wars have revolved. The concept we can never logically or scientifically prove.
The falsehood exists because no one is trying to feel God. They try to understand him as though he is a puzzle that needs to be pieced out. And this is because it is human nature to classify and label everything. They need to give it a shadow or an illusionary existence. Thus because everyone has tried to classify god, they have miserably failed.
I do not profess to know the truth. I merely try to explain why is God necessary in our lives. People who tend to be religious are often fatalistic, believing that God created their lives. This fatalism leads to inability to act correctly or truly. But divine intervention is not a part of the original plan. What is a part of the plan (if it exists) is that God will make the stories interlink so that what will eventually happen appears as a miracle to both actors of the stories.
We need to act. We need to work according to what our judgment and what our intuitions tell us. We must work according as to what we desire. The plan exists because we endeavour to change our lives. It is our effort upon which the plan depends.
The second part. Why do we need to believe in God? Let us assume God does not exist. Then it means that we are in complete control in our lives. That perhaps feels good. But when we are in crisis, say facing bankruptcy. In that case, the rational man comes under stress, and because of such heavy debts and commits suicide. The religious man however will continue to live on, because of his faith that God will intervene and save him. This is why religion is necessary. Because its doctrines teach us to live morally correct. The doctrines are the rules of a utopia. And the fact that we all believe that God will help us bears testimony to the fact, that we manage to pull through tough times and emerge successful.
Maybe that is why, religion is such a success.

1) Religion is NOT successful.look around you.the fact that more than one exists defeats its purpose.and your reason for existence.so you should have already slit yourself by now.
2) All people who do not believe in god do NOT suicide.thats the stupidest thing ANYONE can ever say.if anything there have been more people who have died in the name of god than in any calamity or other cause.
3) who are you to decipher His plan? your just as deluded as the fanatics who run around with scimtars trying to shove their religion (and scimtars =) ) up everyone else's ass.
4) we do not NEED to believe in god because we are insecure because of the absence of a "higher power" which owns all of our asses. Insecurity or brainwashing which causes you not to trust your brain enough to be labeled a functional part of your body.
5) To have faith in darkness is to be able to walk into a wall and not say "ouch" because you believe that it was part of "His" (her? you sexist :P) plan to make your head swell bigger than your brain.

I agree with you on a few points and I disagree with you on a few others.
First of all, I support Vinay's second point. I think a person who commits suicide shows himself to be weak at some level. A strong man, with any semblence of optimism or self-confidence would keep himself on the right track and keep trying. It is true also that more people have died in religious wars than suicide. The problem is there are some people who falsely believe that God will just come along and lift them out of unsavory situations. This causes them to become unproductive, and they don't actively try to lift themselves out of these situations because of this blind belief in God.
It is true that religion has created many problems, but I believe that the problem is not with religion itself. The problem is with the people. Many people are so narrow minded that they cannot accept the beliefs of others and believe themselves to be superior. I would like to ask Vinay if Buddhists and Jains have ever caused any suffering? The problem is not with religion, but with how some people and many religious leaders interpret it.
As they say, God may possibly have created man, but man definitely created religion. I think that religon was created more as a means to attain social harmony, but as different religions clashed, more confuion ensued than harmony. Many religions were never designed to interact. This, I believe, is why we have the problems we have today. Belief in God need not be blind and radical. It can do a lot of good sometimes. Religion helps provide a framework and a plan by which some people live their lives. Some people genuinely need this. I consider myself an agnostic theist, but I still try to remain morally upright all the time, by using religion as a framework.
Once again, I come to one of Vinay's points - 4. We need not depend on a higher authority all the time to go about our daily lives. I don't think that this is a good reason to believe in God.
I believe that God is less an "omnipresent being" and more some sort of manifestation of the mystery we feel when we think about things that are beyond us - a kind of phsychological gap-filler, which destroys the need for explanation and gives us comfort before the unknown. Is it the unknown that we unknowingly worship? I am unsure about religion because of this. God exists in the minds and hearts of billions, and that itself gives Him (or Her as Vinay pointed out) some kind of existence. I do still do believe in the existence of something beyond our understanding that controls our universe - almost like an energy, but not to the extent that it would ever control my life.
After reading through what I have typed again, I realise that I have contradicted myself a number of times. What this means is that I am just as confused as anyone else! And I like Vinay's last point. It's funny, true or otherwise!
